Sam's TURBO Exa

It's a 1983 Nissan Exa turbo, which uses the same engine as the ET Pulsar's (and a lot of components too. Read on to find out more about the birth of "Crazy PSI"!!!

I picked my 1983 Nissan Exa Turbo, a little rough. Both the front and rear bumper had warped, turbo was shot big time, tires were bald, indicators smashed and the panels were dinted, scratched and faded. Despite this, (plus the fact it was the first car I had looked at) I paid my $1150 to become a proud owner of a TURBO four!!! I mean, being a first car and all, I didn't want something worth mega bucks but on the other side I didn't want no hair dressers car! To get my baby all the way back from Ballarat,

the Exa needed to be put on a trailer. Why didn't I drive it? Because with the turbo seals shot, this car was a smoke machine on wheels! After getting her home and showing it to all my mates and my girlfriend (Both of which weren't as confident that the Exa would be pretty sick after a little TLC), it was time to begin! First of all, I needed to fix up those ugly bumpers, making contacts on the ever so helpful www.exaclub.net website I found a rear bumper,

a set of Gold ET Pulsar rims and a couple of other tid bits for $200. I fitted the rear bar, but kept the rims aside until the car was ready for the road so as I would have "fresh" tires. I ripped out the puny T2  turbo and reluctantly got it reco'd. (I wanted a T25, but the old man said not yet!) While putting the turbo back in, I purchased a Simota Pod filter and did the ever so popular Air Flow Meter relocation. this reduces the physical length of the inlet track giving better throttle response (or so I'm told, I've never driven the car near stock before!) As you can see, I also bought a GFB Type 1 Blow off valve, which I'm
very happy with. It wasn't long before I lost sight of getting the car road worthy and registered to the all mighty boost bug! A front mount AVO Bar and plate intercooler was fitted along with a Turbosmart 2 stage boost controller. Somewhere in here I decided that to be able to finish the mods I needed to drive the car places, therefore it must be roadworthy and registered. A few pricey adjustments later and my new baby was a lowed to be driven on the road. I registered it with the plates CZY PSI, because I knew what was going to happen next! The boost was wound up to 10 and 14 psi respectively. I  got a 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhaust fitted with a beautiful 3A racing stainless steel muffler. The car came alive with its new power, sound and looks (the ET Rims were fitted with new tires to become roadworthy). I took
off the Datsun and Nissan Pulsar badges uncluttering the rear of the vehicles cosmetics a lot. I recently made a heat shroud and cold air intake to make sure that my inlet charges are as low as possible. I'm also working on a intercooler waterspray to assist  the cooling duties. Both thermo fans were wired to come on simultaneously instead of one doing all the work and the air conditioning was removed. A small stereo was fitted in the way of a Clarion tape deck, 6 CD stacker, a pair of 6x9's and a Sony 12" Subwoofer to make sure I fit in with the doof croud on Saturday nights! Over all I'm pretty happy with this little car, I mean you wont find many other alternatives that will go vvvrrrrrmmm...pssshhhh, for those kinda dollars!
Future plans for the car? I would love to make the fullboost.com.au's E15ET Top 10 list and I plan to give it a shot at Calder, as soon as I get my P's anyway! If you have any queries, please email me at:
